Honoring an individual artist for their outstanding achievement in the arts and civic life

Michael Tilson Thomas
Composer & Conductor

Mayor London Breed is thrilled to honor Michael Tilson Thomas with the City’s most esteemed cultural distinction.  He was selected for his lifetime of accomplishments, talent and broad impact on audiences here at home and around the world. For the last 25 years, MTT has been an icon of San Francisco’s arts and cultural spirit, a great contributor to civic life, and has been instrumental in putting the San Francisco Symphony on the map as a world-class orchestra.
With 2020 being MTT’s final year as music director at SF Symphony, it is the ideal moment to celebrate him, with the honor and love from the San Francisco community which he so fittingly deserves.
